Villa Shanti feels like stepping into a chic Parisian townhouse transported to coastal South India. The 15 rooms are minimalist, clean, with warm teakwood accents and zero clutter. Plus, their ground-floor restaurant is one of my personal favorite dinner spots in town (their fish in banana leaf and orange-almond cake are legendary).

French architects Tina Trigala and Yves Lesprit restored this 19th-century manor by blending centuries-old teak rafters with sleek contemporary stone. The lap pool shaded by aged trees feels like a private oasis.

Pondicherry isn't just French; its heart beats equally in the Tamil Quarter (Ville Noire). Maison Perumal is a 130-year-old traditional family mansion restored with Athangudi handmade tiles, red oxide verandas, and heavy wooden pillars. The slow courtyard breakfast with fresh idlis, sambar, and filter coffee feels like home.
